"To the Moon and Back" is a vocal by Australian pop duo Savage Garden. It was released in Australia on 4 November 1996 as the 2d single from their self-titled 1997 anthology. It was the follow up to their hit "I Want You". Information technology won the 1997 ARIA Music Award for Vocal of the Yr. The vocal became a top-three hit on the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland Singles Nautical chart, and a elevation-25 hit on the United states of america Billboard Hot 100, and was also the band's first number one in their native country.[ii] [3]

Background [edit]

In an interview with Apple tree Music about their debut anthology, singer Darren Hayes explained the origins of the song.

"I was a big science fiction fan - I loved Blade Runner. I wrote information technology from that bespeak of view, or the thought of what it means to be human. That thought of yearning to express your emotions and your feelings and for that to be legitimized. There was too someone in my life whose persona was very standoffish and who pushed everyone who loved her abroad. Merely I could encounter underneath that hard shell, there was so much pain and all that stuff that I identified with - mum never loved her much, daddy never kept in touch, these are things really bothering this person."[four]

Release and chart performances [edit]

Afterwards the international success of their debut single, "I Want You", there were high expectations for the song equally its follow-upwards. During the song'south commencement charting in the US after its release there in July 1997, the song entered the superlative 40 of the Hot 100 for but one calendar week, peaking at number 37 the final week of Baronial 1997. In the U.k., the single was originally released in September 1997, and in that location it failed to chart in the elevation 40, stalling at number 55 for i calendar week.

Subsequently, "Truly Madly Deeply" became an even bigger hit than their debut, hitting the number one spot in several countries, including both the Hot 100 and the Hot Adult Contemporary charts in the United States, where information technology broke the tape as the longest-running single to that time on the Developed Contemporary charts. While the song did not initially feel success in the U.s., the success of "Truly Madly Deeply" inspired Savage Garden and Columbia Records to remix "To the Moon and Back" in 1998 and release information technology again.

In the wake of such success, the band decided the vocal had greater potential to get a hitting than its first chartings had borne out, and so instead of mining a 4th single from the anthology every bit they had for the Australian market, they decided to mix a shorter edit of "To the Moon and Back" and re-release it internationally in 1998. This time the song peaked at number 24 in America, an improvement upon its starting time release yet still not the blast they had hoped it would exist.

In the Britain, however, their organized religion was rewarded when the song debuted at number three, condign Vicious Garden's biggest hit in the country. This prompted the re-release of their debut single, remixed as "I Desire You '98". The unmarried was certified Silver in French republic in 1998, and sold 209,000.[five]

Disquisitional reception [edit]

Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "The follow-up to the platinum-selling "I Want Y'all" should keep the momentum of this charming Australian duo building quite nicely. Wisely, this rail doesn't attempt to mimic the quirky, nearly novelty-driven audio of its predecessor. Instead, it affirms partners Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones' talent for crafting immediately catchy hooks and solid, sing-forth choruses. Once once again, the music warmly revisits the new-romantic audio of the '80s with its melodramatic blend of satiny synths and jittery guitars."[6]

Music videos [edit]

At that place have been three different music videos for the song. The get-go, accompanying the Australian release of the song, was directed by Catherine Caines and Chris Bentley, and was shot in black and white. This version features Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones performing on what appears to be a space vessel, whilst a female person rider watches. A version of the video accompanied by a dance remix of the track was also released.[seven]

The second, accompanying the The states and original United Kingdom release of the vocal, was directed by Nigel Dick, and features Darren and Daniel performing in an apartment in Malibu whilst a female records the operation. Information technology was filmed between Apr 17 and 18, 1997.[viii] This American video features Hayes with long hair.[nine]

The third version was filmed in New York, and features a sorry-looking teenage daughter traveling by the metro to see her friends (evidently other misfits like herself). This video features Hayes with brusk hair, and is the almost well-known of the three versions.
