Autumn offers a wealth of inspiration, with its burst of beautiful colours evoking a sense of warmth and comfort. Earthy amber, burnt orange and rich red are inviting and well-suited to use indoors, as seen here in these autumn decorating ideas.

1. Tone and texture

Tweeds and wools like these rugged highland fabrics shown top are a quintessential part of the autumn home and bring an element of cosiness and texture alongside a palette of rich hues - from heathery purples to rich, rusty reds. These shades work well alongside robust, earthy ceramics and are set off perfectly by the introduction of purples and deep reds.

2. All in the mix

For a welcoming home with autumnal warmth that is relaxed and eclectic, add in some accents of warm floral fabrics, or cushions with woodland motifs (Fox cushion cover, £6.99, Amazon) . An old Welsh woollen blanket (£22.50, Amazon), classic gingham and toning earthy stripes and tweeds, offset here by a felt stag cushion all combine with natural and painted woods in this informal living room. A jug of branches laden with sloes from the blackthorn, a common hedgerow shrub lend more seasonal style.

3. Warm tapestry

For a real autumnal feel, mix an assortment of patterns, styles and textures. Antique stippled and spongeware ceramics are offset with rustic, coarsely-woven textiles, printed burlaps and hessian or rugged open-weave linens. Turning autumn leaves make an attractive accent scattered on a dining table, while gourds and decorative squashes can make a long-lasting display.

4. Russet hues

Outside, garden displays of autumnal fruits and foliage gathered on woodland walks can create magical displays and will last well at this time of year. A table set up beside your front door, garden gate, or close to the house is ideal. You can periodically ring the changes as the seasons turn, much like a nature table. Old painted metal garden furniture and rustic baskets (£6.99, Amazon) in accent colours are the perfect partners and receptacles for this natural display.

5. Gone to earth

Handthrown, earthy ceramics in terracotta and salt glaze sit alongside turned wooden bowls and platters old and new. All the elements shown above have a particularly tactile appeal and celebrate the handmade and the artisan. A woven linen fabric printed with oversized leaves reinforces the seasonal theme.

6. Natural inspiration

To reflect the seasons indoors choose warm natural woods and partner with soft ochre yellow walls to which you can add a strong textural element with woven rush matting. Collages of pressed leaves make inexpensive, easily homemade artworks and allow you to ring the changes with a dynamic natural display.
